Exploring the Santa Cruz: The Bogan Lab crew hosted children and mentors from The Mayfly Project in early April at the Santa Cruz at Crossroads at Silverbell Park. The Mayfly Project supports children in foster care through fly fishing. Michael Bogan led the morning with students learning about the role of macroinvertebrates in the river.
Bird research using Merlin at Irvington: Apollo Middle School 8th graders spent a beautiful spring morning collecting data on birds. They spent 9 minutes running the Merlin application on their phones, and recorded the data on a group data sheet. Data was collected on the bike path as well as near the water in the river channel. Merlin heard 27 species, and students saw even more! Students wrapped up the trip improving the habitat by collecting trash in the river channel.
Community connection in action: Connections and a 5k Rio Run were celebrated at the April 18 Day of Connection at Bonita Park. BIORETS teachers from the last 4 years of the program came together and shared how they connect students to the Santa Cruz River.
