Each year hundreds of Tucson area students visit the Santa Cruz River and share their creative reflections with the community through art and poetry as part of the Living River of Words, a program of Pima County Conservation Lands and Resources. In 2014, EPA funded a pilot project (Living River) to bring students groups on field trips to the flowing portions of the lower Santa Cruz River. Through this partnership, Pima County was able to expand environmental science, poetry, and art residencies for students to prepare entries to the national Living River of Words: Youth Poetry and Art Contest. Living River of Words (LROW) is also a partnership with the Regional Flood Control District.
